Be a Lifesaver! Some Special Dogs to Consider

Once in a while, we have the chance to help a Pyr who is 7 years or older.

Most of our Seniors come to TGPR after a sad change in their original families. They are wonderfully socialized, affectionate companions who still have many years to share with a new family.

Seniors love to go for walks, but are also perfectly content just snuggling up to watch TV or go on road trips with their owners.

Why do some dogs take so long to find a great home?

Some come to TGPR after being abused or severely neglected. They need time to heal, physically and emotionally. Others have great personalities but don’t look like a typical Pyrs. Sometimes, these were puppies from a Pyr mom and a traveling dad who weren’t adopted when they were still in the “adorable puppy” stage.

Some Pyrs have a physical challenge that limits their quick adoption. Many of our long term dogs simply prefer to be an “only dog” in the family. They are very socialized and very people friendly, they just prefer not to share their families with other canines.

Don’t dismiss a dog just because it wasn’t chosen right away. Each TGPR dog has a story!

A dog with special needs can certainly steal your heart.

Every year, TGPR takes in stray dogs who have been hit by cars or even abandoned in horrendous health. Extensive surgery may correct the physical damage to a hip or leg. But sometimes, amputation is the only choice. Tri-pod dogs are amazingly agile and can run and play just like the fourlegged variety.

Occasionally, the rescue is asked to help a dog with deafness or even blindness. In the right setting, those special canines feel right at home. Others have been through emotional trauma or had to exist without positive socialization. Those Pyrs need patient owners who will allow them the time to learn to trust. Some are great family dogs who simply want to be the “only dog” in the house.

At times, TGPR helps pregnant females who need a safe and loving place to deliver and care for their babies. After the pups are weaned, these beautiful moms are adopted themselves.

Our favorite adopters are those individuals that understand and allow the dogs to be themselves instead of trying to fit them into their own expectations.
